Free Trade Agreements and their implications for the development of the agricultural sector in Peru, 2008-2018

Abstract

In this paper we address the agricultural implications of the Free Trade Agreement signed by Peru with the United States and the Trade Agreement between Peru and the European Union from 2008 to 2018, identifying the positive aspects and the adverse effects that these have had on the development of the Peruvian agricultural sector. The methodology used for this article is explanatory and descriptive. The results of the research are based on the analysis and interpretation of the macroeconomic elements collected, in addition to social indicators given by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism, the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, the Chambers of Commerce of Export Companies, the Analysis Group for Development, and data provided by non-governmental organizations. This work allows us to identify the policies that the Peruvian State must follow for the development and consolidation of a modern agricultural policy, so that the identified deficiencies can be overcome and the agricultural sector can achieve productivity and competitiveness within the framework of free trade agreements; It also seeks to identify ways to address threats to sensitive products and take advantage of the opportunities represented by the free trade agreements signed by Peru.
